Too Close to the Sun is the new West End musical based on the fictional account of the last years of Ernest Hemingway. For the first time on the stage, it will be making its awaited world première on the 16th July at the famous London’s Comedy Theatre.
“Too Close to the Sun” tells the story of the American writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway. He is the author of some of the great classic novels of 20th Century. Many of them are now considered classic of the American literature. The Cuban novella “The Old Man and The Sea” received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, the U.S. award for achievements in journalism, literature and music.
The next year he was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style".
His fascinating and tangle life became the inspiration even for a new musical that is going to perform at the outstanding scene of London’s West End.
The talented novelist attempted suicide in the spring of 1961 and he died due to a self-inflicted shotgun wound. It was not his first attempt to take his own life as he had mood disorders aggravated by alcoholism.
In his last year Hemingway tried to battle the rigours old age taking comfort in the arms of his young secretary. With his wife tolerating the dalliance so as not to break up the marriage, the complex love-triangle is threatened when the secretary starts to push the wife out of the picture. Fooled by the young lover, he is blind to see what are the real plans of the secretary. She is attempting to get rid of his wife and has designs to become the great writer's fifth wife. This would make her the beneficiary of his entire estate.
The plot gets even more thickened when Rex, an old school friend, turns up. Droning with corruption, lies and conspiracy Rex’s dodgy plans are straight to gain the film rights to Hemingway’s life whatever the cost. Will Rex succeed in reaching his sly goal?
Capturing the emotional turbulence at the heart of Hemingway’s last few months, “Too Close to the Sun” is the new extraordinarily thrilling London musical not to be missed!
Based on a play by Ron Read, “Too Close to the Sun” features music and lyrics by John Robinson, whose work was last seen on the London stage of the 2005 “Behind the Iron Mask” musical at the Duchess Theatre.
Among the names that appear on the cast list, is Helen Dallimore. She is known to the audiences from the West End production of Wicked, where she created the role of Glinda. Other actors invovled in the play are: James Graeme (Wall Street Crash), Jay Benedict (Foyles War) and Tammy Joelle (BBC2s MacMusical ) .
The Hemingway’s life musical will run at the Comedy Theatre only for eight summer weeks until the 5th of September. Submit an enquiry with Gift-tours to ensure yourself this absolutely unheard-of experience!
