Based on John Waters' 1988 comedy film, Hairspray has arrived as a musical on the London stage at Shaftesbury theatre.
Set in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A, in the early sixties, Hairspray tells the tale of teenage Tracy's great aspirations: Tracy wants to dance on the oh-so-popular local television program, the Corny Collins Show. Unfortunately for Tracy, her oversize image doesn't agree with the common conception that thin is beautiful. In an unexpected turn of events, she is given an opportunity to audition for the show—and gets in! But will she win the hearts of TV audiences, or will the idea of beauty prevail? The stakes are high.
