Carrie's War musical Carrie's War is the acclaimed stage adaptation of 1973 Nina Bawden’s novel which won the prestigious Phoenix Award in 1993. The Phoenix award is annually awarded to a book published twenty years previously without having received a major award at that time.

“ ... During the war - when England was at war with Germany - the Government sent the children out of the cities so they shouldn't be bombed. We weren't told where we were going. Just told to turn up at our schools with a packed lunch and a change of clothes, then we went to the station with our teachers. There were whole train-loads of children sent away like that ...”

This is the timeless story of the young Carry Willow and her little brother Nick, both evacuated from London during World War II.

When the war air raids threaten their safety, Carrie and her younger brother move from war-torn London to a small Welsh village. They are sent to live with the bullying and priggish grocer Mr. Evans, and his submissive sister Lou. At their new home, they make friends that change their lives forever, and Carrie experiences a slice of life that she will never forget.

When Mr. Evans sends the children to spend the Christmas time at his elder sister's house, Carrie and Nick discover the mysterious Druid's Bottom. There they meet the weird Mister Johnny who speaks a language all of his own and fellow evacuee Albert Sandwich. But it is the admirable housekeeper Hepzibah Green who makes everyone's time at Druid's Bottom so magical. Warm and welcoming, loving and caring with a special kind of insight into everyone's heart, Hepzibah tells a brilliant story and has the children enchanted with tales of the haunted forest and the legend of the screaming skull.

When Carrie and Nick finally leave Wales, Carrie becomes convinced that she has caused the terrible fulfilment of the affliction...until she returns 30 years later with her own children to learn what has become of the forbidding house and her old friends.

Following the success of its 2006 premiere production, the Nina Bawden’s award-winning classic finally comes to the West End this summer. It will run at the Apollo Theatre from 18 June to 12 September 2009.

A passionate and moving story excellently performed by Sara Edwarson in the title role, Prunella Scales as Mrs Gotobed, Amanda Symonds as the witch and James Beddard as Mr Johnny.
