Quite possible Bizet's best known opera, Carmen is the tragic story of a flirtatious gypsy girl who works in a Spanish cigarette factory and gains the attention of a young soldier. After leading him down a path of deliquency, her loose love proves to be more than he can stand. Carmen is a classic production, one of the world's most performed operas since the 1880s, not to be missed by frequent theatre goers and novices alike. In 2010, one of the world’s most performed operas will be making its way to London’s most popular music venue, the O2 Arena, making it the first ever opera to be staged at the O2. The spectacular show is set for three days and will also be sung in English. Directed by David man, Carmen has been taken to new heights and will be performed by over 150 actors accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The O2 Arena
The O2 started off as the famous Millennium Dome built in 2000 and is currently one of Britain’s most successful entertainment centres. The O2 houses such venues as a VUE cinema, the O2 Bubble for exhibitions, the IndigO2 club, as well as in- and outdoor event areas, restaurants and bars.
The closest tube station are the North Greenwich and Canary Wharf tube stations, both situated on the Jubilee line. London Bridge station, on the Northern and Jubilee lines, is also nearby, a short 10 minute walk away. Alternatively, the O2 can be reached by several bus routes (108, 129, 132, 161, 188, 422, 472, 486). Or why not take a boat! The Thames Clipper runs a new O2 Express service.
