Intense and cruelly true, "Chicago" is a musical running since 1975, since its first appearance at Broadway. It landed in London West End at Adelphi Theatre in 1997 and after 9 years of success, it was transferred to Cambridge Theatre in 2006. Exciting and unpredictable, "Chicago" The Musical is a real tragic story, deep but also full of corruption and favoritism.
Sexy and fascinating, after 80 years on stage "Chicago" remains one of the best in musical theatre history, from Broadway to London's West End. From the book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, based on a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, "Chicago" The Musical is directed by Walter Bobbie and has music by John Kander. The plot, developed in two acts, is set in "Chicago" in 1926 and it tells the story, based on true facts, of two young ladies accused of murder. The two protagonists, Velma and Roxie have two very strong personalities and they try to maneuver the media power to draw its attention to their cases to appear innocent. A third and decisive figure in the plot, is the presence of a slick lawyer who helps the two women to be released from the accusations. The show is rich with music and wonderful dance from the original choreography by Bob Fosse.
In all this time "Chicago" has been the musical number one in London West End Theatres and tickets are consistently sold out. The theatrical reviews have been sometimes rigorous mainly because the original cast has changed since its first performance in London West End in 1997. The strength of this musical is without doubt the choreography; intense, sexy, passionate, this powerful form of art is the heart of the Chicago in the '30s. The plot is potent, successful, but basically simple and one demerit note has been given because it is hard to get the path of the characters completely.
"Chicago" is a musical strongly recommended because is a piece of history in the world culture. It has been produced as a movie and a wide range of theatrical reproductions are on stage around the world. It revels the magic and the weakness of the thirties defined also a prohibition era, where two beautiful and successful women are the protagonists of this intricate tale. Power, money and glory are the ingredient for this historical musical, always contemporaneous and captivating.
Since April 2006, the performances of "Chicago" The Musical take place in Cambridge Theatre in London. The Cambridge is a very modern theatre that was completely refurnished in 1950. Its position is very central, it is located in Earlham Street just few minutes away from Covent Garden tube station and Charing Cross train, opposite to the Royal Opera House.
"Chicago" has be defined the sexiest and sweetest love crime of the all time. Two unconceivable murders from two successful young girls who don’t realize their faults. Overall the musical has great humor and lots of sexy scenes and involving choreography. The audience remains always completely satisfied and happy with it.
