"Carousel" great classic musical, set in Maine in 1873, has been nominated by New York’s Time Magazine as the best musical of the 20th century.
It’s all about good family values and it ends with a moral message. This musical contains numerous popular classic songs, like; "If I Loved You", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". Notably, Lesley Garrett, arguably Britain’s most popular soprano, has a massive input. Her singing is outstanding!
The musical also contains outstanding musical dialogues. The actors play their roles flawlessly and the show does it’s massive reputation justice. Furthermore, the fantastic ballet in Act II is well worth the price of admission.
"Carousel" tells the story of the turbulent relationship between the mill-worker Julie Jordan (Alexandra Silber) and Billy Bigelow (Jeremiah James), a carousel barker at the local carnival. When Billy gets fired for flirting with Julie by the owner of the carousel Mrs. Mullin who is jealous, the two of them fall in love very quickly and they get married. Because the young couple don’t have enough money they have to stay with Julie’s cousin, Nettie Fowler (Lesley Garrett).
Billy gets frustrated with his married life and not being able to earn his own money. He starts hanging around with Jigger Craigin, a dodgy criminal. Jiggers proposes Billy to be a part of a robbery, but Billy refuses when he finds out that the potential victim (Julie’s old boss, Mr. Bascombe) might have to be killed. When Billy discovers that Julie is pregnant with his child he decides to be Jigger's accomplice after all. He is determined to provide his child with a good future> and therefore he needs money...and the story continues!
The fantastic cast and creative staff have done miracles, with the support of the musicians from orchestra the musical is wonderful! It is definitely worth to see this musical. "Carousel" is currently playing at Savoy Theatre in London.
